Vocabulary the Adventure

Learning vocabulary through combat.

An educational Unity adventure game where players fight monsters by choosing the correct vocabulary. The game teaches basic words, then tests recall through combat encounters that punish guessing and require players to remember vocabulary to progress.

Problem

Vocabulary practice can become passive when players can skip explanations or guess without consequence. The project needed to make remembering words part of the core game loop instead of a separate study screen.

Approach

I worked as a Unity Developer on a 3-person team, building a game loop where vocabulary knowledge directly affects combat. Players learn basic vocabulary, encounter monsters, and must select the correct answer to attack or continue.

To make the learning stick, the game adds punishment for incorrect answers or ignored lessons, forcing players to recall the vocabulary before they can pass later stages.

Outcome

The project turned vocabulary review into an interactive challenge, using progression and combat feedback to make players pay attention to the words they had been taught.

Key learning

Educational mechanics work better when the lesson is tied to progress. Making vocabulary recall the way to defeat monsters gave the learning content a clear purpose inside the game.
